Beginning on January 1, 2018, the New York State Paid Family Leave Program will go into effect. This program will allow employees in New York State to take paid leave and not have to worry about losing their job as a result. Of course, the employee will need to have a valid reason to take leave. Employees can take leave due to the birth or adoption of a new child, to take care of a seriously ill family member, or to provide assistance when a family member deploys overseas for military service.

It is important to note that all private employees can benefit from the Paid Family Leave program. However, public employers can make the decision as to whether they want to offer Paid Family Leave. Those who choose to take leave in 2018 will be able to take up to 8 weeks of paid family leave. You will be able to receive 50% of your average weekly wage during that time. It is important to note that these benefits will increase over time. By 2021, employees will be eligible for up to 12 weeks of leave and 67% of their average weekly wage. It is also important to be aware that employees will have 0.126% of weekly wages taken to pay for the family leave.
